What you need
- ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu. ChatGPT Free and Go can't add custom MCP servers. On Business, Enterprise and Edu, your workspace admin decides whether you can.
- A computer with chatgpt.com open in a browser, for the setup. The ChatGPT phone apps can't add custom MCP servers.
- An iPhone with Apple Health and the HealthAPI app. It starts with a 7-day free trial, then Pro ($4.99 a month, 100 requests a day) or Developer ($9.99 a month, 1,000 requests a day).
Connect Apple Health to ChatGPT in 5 steps
This is the address you'll paste into ChatGPT:
https://healthapi.app/mcp- Install HealthAPI and sync. Get HealthAPI from the App Store, open it and allow Apple Health. Your data starts syncing and keeps itself up to date. The app's Connect screen can send the address to your computer.
- Open Plugins on chatgpt.com. On chatgpt.com, open Plugins, select + and add a custom MCP server. Not there? Turn on Developer mode in Settings, Security and login, then look again. If it's still missing, your plan or workspace doesn't allow custom MCP servers.
- Fill in the server details. Name it HealthAPI, paste the address as the Server URL and choose OAuth, leaving the other OAuth fields empty. Select I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin.
- Install and approve. Install HealthAPI from your plugins and sign in when ChatGPT asks. A HealthAPI sign-in page opens with a short code. Scan its QR code with your iPhone's camera, or open HealthAPI, go to Connect and enter the code. Then tap Approve.
- Ask. In a chat, type @, pick HealthAPI and ask: “How did I sleep last night?”
Back in HealthAPI, the Connect screen now shows ChatGPT as Connected, and as Working once ChatGPT has looked something up.
About ChatGPT's warning
When you create the plugin, ChatGPT warns you about the risks of custom MCP servers. It shows that warning for every custom MCP server, not only HealthAPI, because it can't vouch for servers OpenAI doesn't run. What HealthAPI can do is narrow: its tools only read the Apple Health data you've synced, none of them can change or delete anything, and nothing connects until you approve it on your iPhone.
What to ask ChatGPT
Ask the way you'd ask a coach. ChatGPT looks up what it needs, usually in a few requests, and answers from your own data. Some examples, with the kind of answer you'll get:
58 ms, up from 52 ms last week. Your highest was Sunday at 71 ms, after your longest night of sleep.
17: 9 runs, 5 strength sessions and 3 rides, 14 h 20 min in total.
Around 12:10 am on Fridays and Saturdays, about an hour later than on weeknights.
Down 2.1 kg since July, from 81.4 to 79.3 kg, most of it in August.
ChatGPT can read up to 50 Apple Health metrics plus workouts, in the categories you turned on in the app, through eight read-only tools. The full list is in the docs for AI agents.
ChatGPT Health and HealthAPI
ChatGPT also has its own Health feature, which connects Apple Health from the ChatGPT iPhone app in the countries where OpenAI offers it. If it's available to you and you only use ChatGPT, it's a good place to start. HealthAPI connects differently, and the same connection works beyond ChatGPT:
| ChatGPT Health | HealthAPI | |
|---|---|---|
| How it connects | From the ChatGPT iPhone app | A custom MCP server on chatgpt.com, approved in HealthAPI on your iPhone |
| Also works in Claude | No | Yes, on every Claude plan |
| REST API for your own scripts | No | Yes, with an OpenAPI spec |
No more uploading export.xml
Before connectors, getting Apple Health into ChatGPT meant exporting it: in the Health app, tap your picture, then Export All Health Data. You get a ZIP with one large XML file inside, often hundreds of megabytes, which is more than ChatGPT can read at once, and it's out of date the moment you make it.
With HealthAPI, ChatGPT asks for only what it needs, like last night's sleep or a 30-day trend, already summed up by day, from data that keeps itself up to date.
Privacy and control
- Read only. ChatGPT can read what you've synced. It can't change or delete anything.
- You approve it. Every connection is approved on your iPhone. To disconnect, open HealthAPI, then Settings, Connected apps, and choose Disconnect, or remove the plugin in ChatGPT.
- Only when you ask. Data goes to ChatGPT when you ask it something, never in the background.
- Your key stays private. Connecting never puts your API key in a chat, and regenerating your key disconnects everything you've connected at once.
- ChatGPT's side. What ChatGPT does with your conversations, including the health data it reads, is covered by OpenAI's privacy policy. HealthAPI's side is in our privacy policy.
If something doesn't work
There's no option to add a custom MCP server
Check that you're on chatgpt.com in a browser, not in the ChatGPT app, and on Plus or higher. Then turn on Developer mode in Settings, Security and login, and look under Plugins, + again. On a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace, ask your admin.
HealthAPI isn't in the @ list
Creating the plugin isn't the last step: install HealthAPI from your plugins and sign in. Then start a new chat and type @.
The code expired
A sign-in waits 10 minutes for you to approve it on your iPhone. If it runs out, sign in to HealthAPI from your plugins again to get a new code.
ChatGPT finds no data, or old data
Open HealthAPI so it can sync, and check that what you're asking about is turned on in the app. ChatGPT only sees what has synced.
ChatGPT says today's requests are used up
Each lookup uses one of your daily HealthAPI requests: 100 a day on Pro and 1,000 on Developer. The count resets at 00:00 UTC.
Questions
Which ChatGPT plans work?
Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, set up on chatgpt.com in a browser. ChatGPT Free and Go can't add custom MCP servers. On Business, Enterprise and Edu, your workspace admin decides whether you can add one.
Can I set it up in the ChatGPT iPhone app?
No. The ChatGPT phone apps can't add custom MCP servers, so set it up on chatgpt.com on a computer. You still approve the sign-in on your iPhone, in HealthAPI.
Can ChatGPT change or delete my health data?
No. Every HealthAPI tool is read only. ChatGPT can read the data you've synced, and nothing in Apple Health or HealthAPI changes.
Does it cost extra?
Not beyond your HealthAPI plan and your ChatGPT plan. Each lookup uses one of your daily HealthAPI requests (100 a day on Pro, 1,000 on Developer). A question usually takes a few, and syncing from your iPhone never counts.
How do I disconnect ChatGPT?
In HealthAPI, open Settings, then Connected apps, and choose Disconnect. You can also remove the plugin in ChatGPT. Regenerating your API key disconnects everything you've connected at once.
Is this medical advice?
No. HealthAPI gives ChatGPT your data; what ChatGPT says is not medical advice. Talk to a doctor about anything that worries you.
