Which one to pick
- In the US, on any ChatGPT plan, with an iPhone: Health in ChatGPT. It's built in and included.
- In the US, on Claude Pro or Max, asking only on your iPhone: Claude's built-in Apple Health beta.
- Outside the US, on Claude Free, on a computer, or in more than one assistant: HealthAPI.
- One question, no new app: export from the Health app and upload the part you need.
- A developer who wants everything on their own machine: a local MCP server that reads the export.

The built-in options
Health in ChatGPT connects Apple Health from the ChatGPT iPhone app, then answers health questions anywhere in ChatGPT. It is for adults in the US, on every ChatGPT plan including Free and Go, and it can also connect medical records there.
Claude's Apple Health option lives in the Claude iPhone app: ask a health question and Claude asks for Apple Health permission. It is a beta for Pro and Max subscribers in the US, and it only works in the iPhone app, not on the web or desktop.
If you fit either one, start there. Both are free with the plan you already have.
HealthAPI
HealthAPI is an iPhone app that syncs your Apple Health data to your own account, plus a connector that Claude, ChatGPT and other AI apps use to read it. It is listed in Claude's connector directory, so on Claude you find it under Connectors and select Connect; in ChatGPT you add it as a plugin. Either way, you approve the connection on your iPhone, and the apps can read your data but never change it.
Because the data sits in your account rather than inside one assistant, the same sync works in Claude, ChatGPT, Mistral Vibe and Cursor, and in your own scripts over a REST API. It covers 50 metrics plus workouts and sleep stages (the list).
Step by step: Claude, ChatGPT, Mistral Vibe, Cursor, or outside the US. Free for 2 days, no card needed. Then an optional 7-day free trial when you subscribe.
A manual export
In the Health app, tap your picture, then Export All Health Data. You get a zip with an XML file of everything Health has ever recorded. It costs nothing and needs no new app, but after a few years with an Apple Watch the file is often hundreds of megabytes, far more than a chat should read at once, so pull out what you need first. Our Python guide shows how, and the export guide compares the export with JSON from HealthAPI.
The export doesn't update itself: to ask about last night, export again.
A local MCP server
Several open-source Apple Health MCP servers read the Health app's export on your own computer and give a desktop app such as Claude Desktop tools to query it. Your data stays on that computer, which is the main reason to choose one. The trade-offs: you install and run it yourself, the data is only as fresh as your last export, and AI apps on the web or your phone can't reach it. Some export apps can refresh the data for you; Health Auto Export's Premium tier, for example, has a sample MCP server that reads from the app over your local network.

Questions
What is the best way to connect Apple Health to ChatGPT?
In the US, Health in ChatGPT is built in and included on every plan: connect Apple Health from the ChatGPT iPhone app. Outside the US, or if you also want Claude or your own code to read the same data, add HealthAPI as a ChatGPT plugin on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu (steps).
Can Claude read Apple Health on the Free plan?
Not with Claude's own option, which is a US beta for Pro and Max in the Claude iPhone app. HealthAPI is in Claude's connector directory and works on every Claude plan, including Free, in any country where Claude is available (steps).
Can ChatGPT or Claude read Apple Health on a Mac or PC?
Claude's built-in option works only in the Claude iPhone app. With HealthAPI you connect once, and then Claude reads your data on the web, on desktop and on your phone, and ChatGPT on chatgpt.com. The Health app itself isn't on Mac or PC; here are the ways to see it there.
Can I just upload my Apple Health export to ChatGPT or Claude?
You can upload part of it. The Health app exports a zip with one large XML file, often hundreds of megabytes after a few years with an Apple Watch, so pull out the metric and dates you need first (a few lines of Python do it) and upload that. The file is a snapshot: it won't update when you sleep or train again.
Is there an Apple Health MCP server?
Yes, of both kinds. HealthAPI is a hosted one at https://healthapi.app/mcp, kept up to date from your iPhone and reachable from Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP clients (details). Open-source local servers read the Health app's export on your own computer.
Which option keeps my data most private?
A manual export or a local MCP server keeps the file on your own devices, though whatever you ask about still goes to the AI provider. The built-in options keep your data with OpenAI or Anthropic. HealthAPI keeps what you sync in your own account, lets in only the apps you approve on your iPhone, read only, and you can disconnect them, export your data or delete your account in the app.
