What you need
- An iPhone with Apple Health. Data from your Apple Watch and from apps that write to Apple Health comes along too.
- The HealthAPI app. It starts with a 7-day free trial, then Pro ($4.99 a month, 100 requests a day) or Developer ($9.99 a month, 1,000 requests a day).
- A Claude account on any plan, including Free, which allows one custom connector at a time. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner adds HealthAPI first in Organization settings, Connectors.
Connect Apple Health to Claude in 4 steps
This is the address you'll paste into Claude:
https://healthapi.app/mcp- Install HealthAPI and sync. Get HealthAPI from the App Store, open it and allow Apple Health. Your data starts syncing and keeps itself up to date. The app's Connect screen has these same steps, with a button that copies the address and opens Claude.
- Add a custom connector in Claude. In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors. Choose + Add, then Add custom connector. Name it HealthAPI, paste the address and select Continue twice.
- Sign in. Keep Sign in now and Claude's published identity, select Add, then Connect. A HealthAPI sign-in page opens with a short code. On a computer, scan its QR code with your iPhone's camera. On your iPhone, tap Open HealthAPI to approve. You can also open HealthAPI, go to Connect and enter the code.
- Approve and ask. In HealthAPI, tap Approve. The sign-in page sends you back to Claude. Ask: “How did I sleep last night?”
Back in HealthAPI, the Connect screen now shows Claude as Connected, and as Working once Claude has looked something up.
What to ask Claude
Ask the way you'd ask a coach. Claude looks up what it needs, usually in a few requests, and answers from your own data. Some examples, with the kind of answer you'll get:
6 h 52 min asleep, with 1 h 18 min of deep sleep and 1 h 41 min of REM. You fell asleep at 11:24 pm and woke at 6:40 am.
Yes. You averaged 9,140 steps a day over the last 30 days, up from 7,860 the month before.
It has come down from about 61 bpm in July to 57 bpm this month, a little lower each month.
On 5 of 7 days. Tuesday (14 min) and Saturday (22 min) fell short.
What Claude can read
Claude reads the Apple Health data you've synced to HealthAPI, in the categories you turned on in the app. That's up to 50 Apple Health metrics plus workouts: steps, distance and active energy, heart rate, resting heart rate and HRV, sleep stages, VO2 max, blood oxygen, respiratory rate, weight and other body measurements, and more. It sees nothing else on your phone.
It reads them through eight read-only tools, such as one day's summary, a week's summary, sleep by night and a single metric's trend. None of them can change or delete anything. The full list is in the docs for AI agents.
Claude's built-in Apple Health and HealthAPI
Claude also has its own Apple Health option, built into the Claude iPhone app. When we last checked, in October 2026, it was a beta for Pro and Max subscribers in the US. Here is how the two compare:
| Built into Claude | HealthAPI | |
|---|---|---|
| Claude plans | Pro and Max | Every plan, including Free |
| Countries | US only | Not limited to the US |
| Where you use it | The Claude iPhone app | Claude on the web, desktop, iPhone and Android |
| Also works in | Claude only | ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor and your own scripts |
| How you allow it | Apple Health's permission screen | Approve in the HealthAPI app |
| Cost | Included with Pro and Max | A HealthAPI plan, after a 7-day free trial |
If you're in the US on Pro or Max and only use Claude on your iPhone, the built-in option may be all you need. HealthAPI is for everyone else, and for anyone who wants the same data on a computer, in ChatGPT or in their own code.
Privacy and control
- Read only. Claude can read what you've synced. It can't change or delete anything.
- You approve it. Every connection is approved on your iPhone. To disconnect, open HealthAPI, then Settings, Connected apps, and choose Disconnect, or remove the connector in Claude.
- Only when you ask. Data goes to Claude when you ask it something, never in the background.
- Your key stays private. Connecting never puts your API key in a chat, and regenerating your key disconnects everything you've connected at once.
- Claude's side. What Claude does with your conversations, including the health data it reads, is covered by Anthropic's privacy policy. HealthAPI's side is in our privacy policy.
Using Claude Code or the desktop app?
The Claude desktop app uses the connectors on your Claude account, so there's nothing more to set up there. In Claude Code, add the same address from your terminal:
Then run /mcp in Claude Code, choose HealthAPI and sign in. The sign-in page says it returns to a program on your computer; approve it in HealthAPI as usual.
If something doesn't work
Claude won't let me add another custom connector
The Free plan allows one custom connector at a time. Remove the one you have in Customize, Connectors, or move to a paid plan.
Nothing happens when I select Connect
If no HealthAPI sign-in page appears, check that your browser isn't blocking pop-ups for claude.ai, then select Connect again.
The code expired
A sign-in waits 10 minutes for you to approve it. Select Connect in Claude again to get a new code.
Claude finds no data, or old data
Open HealthAPI so it can sync, and check that what you're asking about is turned on in the app. Claude only sees what has synced.
Claude says today's requests are used up
Each lookup uses one of your daily HealthAPI requests: 100 a day on Pro and 1,000 on Developer. The count resets at 00:00 UTC.
Claude asks me to connect again
That happens after you disconnect it or regenerate your API key, or when the connection hasn't been used for 60 days. Select Connect and approve it again.
Questions
Does it work on the Claude Free plan?
Yes. The Free plan allows one custom connector at a time, and HealthAPI can be it. Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise work too; on Team and Enterprise, an owner adds it first in Organization settings, Connectors.
Does it work outside the US?
Yes. Adding HealthAPI as a custom connector doesn't depend on where you live, unlike Claude's built-in Apple Health option, which is for the US. You need the HealthAPI app on your iPhone and a Claude account.
Can Claude change or delete my health data?
No. Every HealthAPI tool is read only. Claude can read the data you've synced, and nothing in Apple Health or HealthAPI changes.
Does it cost extra?
Not beyond your HealthAPI plan and your Claude plan. Each lookup uses one of your daily HealthAPI requests (100 a day on Pro, 1,000 on Developer). A question usually takes a few, and syncing from your iPhone never counts.
How do I disconnect Claude?
In HealthAPI, open Settings, then Connected apps, and choose Disconnect. Removing the connector in Claude's Customize, Connectors works too. Regenerating your API key disconnects everything you've connected at once.
Is this medical advice?
No. HealthAPI gives Claude your data; what Claude says is not medical advice. Talk to a doctor about anything that worries you.
