Analyze Apple Watch sleep with AI

Claude and ChatGPT are good at finding patterns in your sleep, as long as they read the numbers rather than a screenshot. With HealthAPI connected, they see each night's deep, core and REM sleep, when you fell asleep and woke up, and can compare it with your HRV, resting heart rate and workouts.

Why screenshots and exports give wrong answers

A screenshot is a picture. The AI has to estimate bar heights, sees a week at most, and can't line sleep up with anything else.

The raw export double counts. Apple Health stores sleep as many short segments, often from your Apple Watch and your iPhone or a sleep app at the same time, plus time in bed and awake. Adding them up gives nights of 12 hours or more, and a night that starts before midnight lands on two dates.

HealthAPI counts sleep the way the Health app does: time asleep only, each source once, and each night on the morning it ended.

What the AI reads for each night

FieldWhat it is
AsleepCore, deep, REM and unstaged sleep. Awake and in bed are separate.
Core, deep, REMThe stages Apple Watch records. Zero on nights without a Watch, and left out of stage averages.
UnstagedAsleep time from an iPhone, an older Watch or another sleep app.
Awake, in bedTime awake during the night, and total time in bed if it was recorded.
Fell asleep, woke upThe first and last asleep moment, in your timezone.

Alongside sleep, the same connection reads your HRV, resting heart rate, steps, workouts and the rest of the 50 synced metrics, so one question can cross them. All of it is read only.

Set it up in 3 steps

  1. Install HealthAPI

Get it from the App Store, allow Apple Health, and let your history sync.
  2. Connect Claude or ChatGPT

Claude: from its connector directory, on every plan including Free (guide). ChatGPT: as a plugin on Plus or higher (guide). Mistral Vibe works too, on every plan (guide). Approve the connection on your iPhone.
  3. Ask about your sleep

Start with “How did I sleep last night?”, then try the prompts below.

Prompts that work

“How did I sleep this week compared with last?”

Better. You averaged 7.7 h asleep, up 6%, with 1.1 h of deep sleep a night. You fell asleep before 11 pm on 5 of 7 nights.

Last night and this week

  • “How did I sleep last night, and how does it compare with my usual week?”
  • “Show my last 14 nights as a table: time asleep, deep, REM, and when I fell asleep.”

Trends

  • “Has my deep sleep changed over the last 3 months? Give me the monthly averages.”
  • “How consistent is my bedtime? Which nights were more than an hour off?”

Sleep and the rest of your day

  • “On nights after a workout, do I sleep longer or shorter than on rest days?”
  • “Is my HRV higher the morning after nights with more deep sleep?”
  • “Do I sleep less on nights after days with fewer than 5,000 steps?”

Checks before you trust an answer

  • “Which of the last 30 nights have no sleep stages recorded?”
  • “List the numbers you used for that answer, night by night.”

Getting better answers

  • Name the period. “The last 30 nights” is clearer than “lately”.
  • Ask for the numbers. A table per night lets you check the answer and spot a night the Watch missed.
  • Compare like with like. Stage averages only make sense over nights that recorded stages; ask the AI to leave the others out.
  • Treat it as a pattern, not a diagnosis. HealthAPI and the AI apps aren't medical devices. For anything that worries you, talk to a doctor.

Questions

Can ChatGPT analyze my Apple Health sleep data?

Yes, if it can read the data itself rather than a screenshot. In the US, ChatGPT's Health feature can connect Apple Health from its iPhone app. Anywhere, on Plus and higher, you can connect HealthAPI as a plugin; Claude works with HealthAPI on every plan, including Free.

Do I need an Apple Watch?

For deep, core and REM sleep, yes: Apple Watch records the stages. Sleep from your iPhone's Sleep Focus or from other sleep apps that write to Apple Health comes through as time asleep or in bed, without stages.

How far back can the AI look?

As far back as your synced data goes. One lookup covers up to 92 nights, and the AI can make several for a longer period.

Why does a nap show up in last night's sleep?

A night is the sleep that ended between 6 pm the day before and 6 pm that day, so a nap that ends at 3 pm is counted with the night before it. Ask the AI to list bedtimes and wake times when that matters.

Does it use my daily requests?

Yes: each lookup is one request. A sleep question usually takes one to three, and syncing from your iPhone never counts.

Can the AI tell me if I have a sleep disorder?

No. It can spot patterns in your numbers, such as short nights or late bedtimes, but it can't diagnose anything. If you snore, wake up tired or can't sleep, talk to a doctor.
