What WHOOP sends to Apple Health
WHOOP lists these exports, and HealthAPI syncs all of them:
| WHOOP exports | The AI reads it as |
|---|---|
| Sleep | Sleep per night: time asleep, bedtime and wake time |
| Resting heart rate | restingHeartRate: daily average |
| Blood oxygen (SpO2) | oxygenSaturation, as a percent |
| Respiratory rate | respiratoryRate |
| Heart rate, during sleep and activities | heartRate: daily average, low and high |
| Workouts (auto-detected activities) and active energy | Workouts with type, start, minutes and energy; activeEnergyBurned |
| Steps, if you turn them on in WHOOP | stepCount: daily total |
Steps come from WHOOP 4.0, 5.0 and MG. WHOOP works out calories with its own method, so its active energy won't always match another device's for the same day.
Recovery, Strain and HRV stay in WHOOP
HRV isn't exported. WHOOP says it doesn't send HRV to Apple Health: it measures RMSSD, while Apple Health stores SDNN. If you also wear an Apple Watch, the HRV the AI sees is the Watch's SDNN, which isn't directly comparable with the number in the WHOOP app.
Recovery, Strain and Sleep Performance aren't on WHOOP's export list, and neither are Recovery activities such as meditation and stretching. The AI does see what WHOOP calls Recovery metrics (resting heart rate, blood oxygen and respiratory rate) and your sleep. Don't ask it to recreate the score from them: it would be a guess. Ask about the measures themselves, and see training readiness and HRV for prompts that work without a score.
Set it up
Turn on Apple Health in WHOOP
In the WHOOP app, open More, then App Settings, Integrations and Apple Health. Tap Connect, choose Turn on all or pick categories, and tap Allow. To change it later: Health app, your profile picture, Apps, WHOOP.Install HealthAPI
Get it from the App Store, allow Apple Health, including sleep and heart data, and let your history sync.Ask
Start with “How did I sleep this week, and what was my resting heart rate?”
If you reinstall WHOOP, WHOOP says you have to turn the Apple Health connection on again.
Prompts that fit WHOOP data
“Does short sleep push my resting heart rate up?”
A little. After nights under 7 h, your resting heart rate averaged 56 bpm, against 53 bpm after longer nights, over 60 days.
Resting heart rate and sleep
- “Is my resting heart rate higher after nights with less than 7 hours asleep? Use the last 60 days.”
- “Which 5 days this month had my highest resting heart rate, and how long did I sleep the night before each?”
- “Compare my sleep on weeknights and weekends over the last 8 weeks.”
Overnight vitals
- “Show my weekly average blood oxygen and respiratory rate for the last 3 months, and flag any week that stands out.”
Workouts and activity
- “How many hours of workouts did I log each week this month, by type?”
- “On days with a workout over an hour, how many steps did I take in total?”
Checks before you trust an answer
- “List my workouts from the last 30 days and flag any two that start within 5 minutes of each other.”
- “Flag any night in the last 30 with more than 11 hours asleep.”
Duplicates and double counts
- Workouts can appear twice. WHOOP imports workouts from Apple Health and exports its own, so a run your watch also recorded can land twice. WHOOP suggests turning off Workouts for WHOOP in the Health app if you see duplicates.
- A night two devices track counts once. If WHOOP and an Apple Watch or ring both record a night, HealthAPI keeps the fuller record instead of adding them. To get every night from the Watch, turn off Sleep for WHOOP in the Health app; to get every night from WHOOP, take the Watch off at night.
- Steps and energy are counted once, by the source higher in Apple Health's list, and your iPhone and Apple Watch rank above apps by default. HealthAPI's daily totals follow that order. To change it: Health, Browse, Activity, Steps, Data Sources & Access, Edit.
WHOOP Coach or Claude?
WHOOP Coach is WHOOP's own AI, in the WHOOP app. WHOOP says it analyzes your HRV, resting heart rate and sleep debt, and recommends a Strain target for the day. For Recovery and Strain questions, it has data Apple Health never gets.
Claude or ChatGPT with HealthAPI is for the questions that reach beyond the band: WHOOP's sleep next to your smart scale, a blood pressure cuff, a glucose sensor or an Apple Watch, long tables over months, and answers in the assistant you already use. The two don't get in each other's way.
HealthAPI and the AI apps aren't medical devices. Treat what they find as patterns to look into, and talk to a doctor about anything that worries you.
Questions
Can ChatGPT or Claude read my WHOOP data?
Yes, through Apple Health. WHOOP sends your sleep, resting heart rate, blood oxygen, respiratory rate, heart rate and workouts to Apple Health, HealthAPI syncs Apple Health to your own account, and Claude (every plan) or ChatGPT (Plus and higher) read it from there, read only.
Why isn't my WHOOP HRV in Apple Health?
WHOOP doesn't export HRV to Apple Health. WHOOP measures HRV as RMSSD and Apple Health stores SDNN, a different measure. If you also wear an Apple Watch, the HRV the AI sees is the Watch's.
Can the AI see my Recovery or Strain score?
No. They aren't on WHOOP's list of what it exports to Apple Health. The AI sees resting heart rate, sleep, respiratory rate and blood oxygen, but it can't recreate WHOOP's score from them, so ask WHOOP Coach about Recovery.
Why do I see the same workout twice?
Two sources wrote it, often WHOOP and a watch or another app. WHOOP says this is more likely with both import and export on, and suggests turning off WHOOP's Workouts in the Health app. HealthAPI syncs what Apple Health holds, so the copy shows up in counts too.
Does it work outside the US?
Yes. ChatGPT's and Claude's own Apple Health options are US only, but HealthAPI isn't tied to a country and is in use in the UK, Europe, Canada, Australia and Asia.
Does it use my daily requests?
Yes: each lookup the AI makes is one request. Most questions take one to three, and syncing from your iPhone never counts.
