Your Oura Ring data in Claude and ChatGPT

Your ring already writes its sleep, heart rate, steps and workouts to Apple Health. HealthAPI syncs Apple Health to your own account, so Claude or ChatGPT can read those nights next to your workouts, your weight and everything else your iPhone collects. It works outside the US too.

What Oura shares with Apple Health

Oura's Apple Health connection works on iPhone with Gen2 rings, and with Gen3 or later on an active membership. This is what Oura lists as written to Apple Health, and how the AI reads it through HealthAPI:

Oura writesThe AI reads it asGood for

Not on Oura's list: your Readiness, Sleep and Activity scores, HRV, body temperature and blood oxygen. Those stay in the Oura app, so don't ask Claude to work out your Readiness: it would be a guess. Everything else in Apple Health is there too, from your scale, blood pressure cuff or Apple Watch, across the 50 synced metrics.

Set it up

  1. Turn on Apple Health in the Oura app

Tap the menu at the top left, then Settings. Under Data sharing, tap Apple Health, turn on Connect to Health and allow the categories you want to share.
  2. Install HealthAPI

Get it from the App Store, allow Apple Health, including Sleep, and let your history sync.
  3. Connect Claude or ChatGPT

Claude: from its connector directory, on every plan including Free (guide). ChatGPT: as a plugin on Plus or higher (guide). Mistral Vibe works too (guide). Approve the connection on your iPhone.
  4. Ask about your ring's nights

Start with “How did I sleep this week?”, then try the prompts below.

Oura notes that its data may not reach Apple Health if Background App Refresh is off, Low Power Mode is on, or you haven't opened the Oura app that day. Open Oura once a day; HealthAPI syncs on its own after that.

Prompts for ring wearers

“How did my ring say I slept this week?”

Steady. You averaged 7.4 h asleep with 1.3 h of deep sleep. Your shortest night was Tuesday, 6.1 h, after a workout that ended at 9 pm.

Your ring's nights

  • “Show my last 14 nights as a table: time asleep, deep, REM, and when I fell asleep and woke up.”
  • “Which nights this month did I sleep under 6 hours, and what did the days before them have in common?”

Sleep and the rest of your day

  • “On days I walked more than 10,000 steps, did I sleep longer that night?”
  • “Do I sleep less after workouts that end after 7 pm? Use the last 60 days.”
  • “Has my nighttime respiratory rate changed over the last 3 months? Give me monthly averages.”

Heart rate, without a Readiness score

  • “What was my lowest heart rate each day this month, and is it going down?”
  • “Compare my weekly average heart rate with my weekly hours asleep since July.”

Checks before you trust an answer

  • “Flag any night in the last 30 with more than 11 hours asleep.”
  • “Which of the last 30 nights have no sleep stages recorded?”

Wearing a ring and an Apple Watch

A night both track counts once. HealthAPI doesn't add the two together: where the ring's night and the Watch's overlap, it keeps the fuller record, and a nap only one of them caught still counts. That means some nights can come from the ring and others from the Watch. To get every night from the Watch, turn off Sleep for Oura in iPhone Settings, under Health, Data Access & Devices, Oura. To get every night from the ring, take the Watch off at night.

Steps and energy are counted once. When two sources record the same minutes, Apple Health counts the one higher in its list, and your iPhone and Apple Watch rank above apps by default. HealthAPI's daily totals follow that order, so they match the Health app. To let the ring's steps count first, Oura suggests: Health, Browse, Activity, Steps, Data Sources & Access, Edit, then drag Oura to the top.

HRV comes from the Watch. With both, the AI sees the Watch's HRV and resting heart rate, which can differ from the numbers in the Oura app. Compare each device with itself over time, not the two with each other. For more on that, see training readiness and HRV.

Oura Advisor or Claude?

Oura has its own AI, Oura Advisor, in the Oura app. It reads things Apple Health never gets, such as your scores and their contributors, and your tags. Ask it why your Readiness dropped. Ask Claude or ChatGPT when the question crosses devices and apps, when you want a long table or a year of data, or when you'd rather use the assistant you already use for everything else.

HealthAPI and the AI apps aren't medical devices. Treat what they find as patterns to look into, and talk to a doctor about anything that worries you.

Questions

Can ChatGPT or Claude read my Oura Ring data?

Yes, through Apple Health. Oura writes your sleep, heart rate, steps and workouts to Apple Health, HealthAPI syncs Apple Health to your own account, and Claude (every plan) or ChatGPT (Plus and higher) read it from there. You approve each connection on your iPhone, and access is read only.

Can the AI see my Readiness score or HRV?

No. Oura's list of what it writes to Apple Health doesn't include Readiness, Sleep or Activity scores, HRV, body temperature or blood oxygen, so they stay in the Oura app. If you also wear an Apple Watch, the AI sees the Watch's HRV and resting heart rate.

Do I need an Apple Watch?

No. The ring on its own gives the AI your sleep with stages, heart rate, respiratory rate, steps, active energy and workouts. Resting heart rate isn't on Oura's list, so without a Watch ask about your lowest heart rate of the day instead.

I wear my ring and my Apple Watch to bed. Which sleep does the AI see?

One record per night, not both added together. Where the ring's night and the Watch's overlap, HealthAPI keeps the fuller one, with time in sleep stages counting most, and it still counts a nap only one of them caught. To get every night from the Watch, turn off Sleep for Oura in Health; to get every night from the ring, take the Watch off at night.

Does it work outside the US?

Yes. ChatGPT's and Claude's own Apple Health options are US only, but HealthAPI isn't tied to a country and is in use in the UK, Europe, Canada, Australia and Asia.

Does it use my daily requests?

Yes: each lookup the AI makes is one request. A sleep question usually takes one to three, and syncing from your iPhone never counts.
